Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, a member of Catholic Health Services of Long Island, is a 537-bed (including 100 nursing home beds), not-for-profit hospital serving the communities on the south shore of Long Island in West Islip, New York. Good Samaritan’s high-quality medical services extend across the continuum of care to all disciplines, both for inpatients and outpatients.

A stellar reputation exists for Good Samaritan’s first-rate oncology, cardiology, orthopedic, women’s, respiratory, neurosurgical and surgical care. All are complemented by an array of state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging capabilities that includes a GE Revolution 512-speed CT scanner and a sophisticated Department of Imaging Services. Good Samaritan is one of the largest providers of emergency services on Long Island. The Ambulatory Surgery Department, where patients have same day procedures, treats an average of almost 300 patients each week. More than 26,000 patients a year are admitted for inpatient services.

Additionally, services for women are available in obstetrics, gynecology and maternal/child care as well as diagnostic imaging for cancer screening and treatment. Pediatric patients are treated in the Pediatric Emergency Department and, if necessary, admitted to the Pediatric Unit or the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Pediatric sub-specialists are available around the clock to support these medical services.

Rehabilitation Services, which includes Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapies, moved to an expanded location in 2008 to meet the growing needs of the community for outpatient therapy services.  The department was able to expand their pediatric programs for physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as their specialized pediatric interdisciplinary feeding program. As well as, offer programs for cancer patients suffering from fatigue and other treatment related impairments and vestibular rehab  for patients suffering from the effects of vertigo. The expanded space also allowed them to offer free balance screens and sports screens and monthly educational programs on back safety and prevention of falls to the local community members.

To address the physical, emotional and spiritual impact of advanced disease, Good Samaritan has incorporated its pastoral and palliative services into the comprehensive care provided. In 2004, a nurse-driven palliative care consultation program was initiated, and since, has grown to include a hospital-wide consultation service. The Palliative Care program includes inpatient care, an outpatient clinic and a strong presence throughout the continuum of care encompassing home care, dialysis and long-term care facilities. More than 600 patients annually are supported through this initiative.

The need for expert cardiology care has steadily increased in the community. In response, the St. Francis Hospital Open Heart Surgery Program at Good Samaritan has brought its award-winning surgical program to the area.
